The new species of tarantula that lives near Folsom prison in the state of California, is named after the musician Johnny Cash. One of the icons of American popular music Johnny Cash, who always wore black and has written song about Foslom prison named “Folsom Prison Blues” and in the 1960’s has held series of concerts for the prisoners.
The ”Aphonopelma Johnnycashi’ is among the 14 new species of tarantula that have been discovered in in the south of the United States. This is great example of how biodiversity can be found literally in someones backyard, which contradicts the popular opinion that new species come from areas of countries that are not at all or little explored, but actually that is not the case. After all the sample of ”Aphonopelma Johnnycashi’ is not detected in the California wilderness but near the populated area.
The spider is found in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, and in that vicinity is the Folsom prison, so it did not take a hard effort in naming the newly found species. The name is perfect. The spider lives around Folsom, males are predominately black… everything matches. After all the person who discovered this spider is an avid fan of Johnny Cash, every piece fall in its own place.
